Tourism, trade
and Services

Oulu is the Capital of Northern Scandinavia.

60% of the people visiting Oulu are leisure tourists. No wonder because Oulu has plenty to offer: different cultural attractions and festivals, shopping facilities, nature wonders in each of the four seasons, even the longest beach around the Bothnian Bay. The city of Oulu has plenty of tourist attractions which are the focus of upcoming investments. For example, Nallikari, Varjakka and Oulu market place are just to name a few.

Trade and services

The turnover of trade in Oulu area is about 5,2 billion euros. Oulu’s 22% growth has been the fastest in Arctic Europe and it will remain the same in upcoming years.

Trade and consumer services employ nearly 15 000 people in the Oulu region. Main shopping centers are Zeppelin, Ideapark and the brand new Valkea. The underground parking facility Kivisydän has made the city center more accessible and additional 200-300 million euro streamlined investments are reserved for upgrading the city center.

The City of Oulu’s City Center Vision 2040 has ambitious goals for significant growth of the city center in the near future. The plans include large projects with which mega events and significant increase of tourism in the city are pursued.

It is estimated that by 2030, trade services will need 500,000 square meters of additional space, which is double the space it uses now.
